pcToys Powermax 470W Power supply

Upon careful inspection of the label I observed an interesting piece of text. CAUTION! HAZARDOUS! Do not remove this cover! Trained service personnel only! No serviceable components inside! Now, being a reviewer it is my responsibility to void warranties, bring products to the edge, and risk my life for your enjoyment. Now kids, dont try this at home. This should only be attempted by a qualified trained service personnel, which I luckily happen to be, *cough* *cough*.

Here we have a peak of the insides. We void the warranties so you dont have to! Nothing to note in here, just a bunch of components, and no idea what how they work. But who cares, as long as it works! =P However, the components are pretty crammed in there, so three fans are definitely required to cool down this bad boy.

Here we see one of the fans. They are not your regular 25mm fans, they are a slimmer version 15mm fan. Will this affect performance, probably not; this power supply is already large enough! The fans are also clear; this definitely adds a few points to the coolness factor.

Installation

The installation of this big and bulky power supply was not as bad as I thought it would be. My case is a bit roomy so the extra length of the power supply was no problem. However, I did run into two problems.

As we can see in the above picture, I was only able to fasten 3 of the 4 screws. Is this a big deal? Not really. However, it is still a little inconvenience.

The second problem that I ran into was this horrible wire mess! There was way too much excess wires. All I required was 2 molex connectors and the mother board connector. The mother board adapter is also very bulky and doesnt look too great.

Conclusion

This power supply sure isnt your average power supply! Not many PSUs have such high voltage. In fact, 470W is way more than the average user requires. This kind of PSU is for the PC enthusiast with water cooling and 10 fans in his case =P. Lets state some of the pros and cons of this thing.

Pros

- Black, not your average silver color
- Very long power connectors, good for those with huge cases
- SIS connectors for server mother boards
- 10 molex and 4 floppy connectors – enough to power a small city ;)
- A whopping 420W, 470W, or 520W
- Clear fans look real cool
- Adjustable fan speed settings
- Additional AC input

Cons

- Too many wires/connectors for the average user
- Wires may cause airflow problems
- Length issue may present problem in smaller cases
- No high speed fan setting

R&B gives this power supply a 4 outa 5!
