pcToys Powermax 470W Power supply

Lately, more and more people have been modding their cases to the point where there is nothing else to touch up. Most people, such as myself, ignore one simple and obvious thing, the ugly big box called the power supply. Some people mod theirs, but they a minority. Today we will look at the Power Maxx 470W Aluminum Power Supply. Sounds sweet, lets check it out!

Specs on the power supply

First, lets take a look at the specs, which we can find on the back of the box.
- ATX 12 Volt
- Universal Connect Fits Most of Branded Motherboards
- Electric-Shock-Free Protection
- Over Voltage Protection
- Over Current Protection
- Short Circuit Protection
- 3 Speed Thermal Fan Control Switch
- 3 Temperature Controlled Dual Ball Bearing Fans
- Additional AC Output for Peripheral

Whew! Thats a lot of features, especially for a power supply! Now lets check out this puppy!

The box

Very impressive packaging I must say myself. It looks very professional and good-looking. Is it really necessary? Maybe not, but in most cases, first impressions mean a lot! The box is also very strong, not to mention that the power supply is located in bubble wrap, nothing will happen to it during shipping.

Inside the box

Wow, nice package we have here. We have the power supply, a 24 to 20 pin adapter, power cord, screws, zip ties, and of course the manual. Small extra things arent always necessary, but theyre never a bad thing.

Wow, thats a lot of cables. The power cable is sleeved, thats always a good thing. These cables are really long, I swear, these molex connectors are over a meter long! This is very good for the users with huge cases, but bad for us little pc users. This will cause a huge wire mess in a case. Now, on the topic of cables, lets see what kind of connectors we have here:

- 10 4-Pin Molex Connectors
- 2 4-Pin Floppy Connectors
- 1 SSI 8-Pin Connector
- 1 SSI 4-Pin Connector
- SSI 24 Pin Motherboard Connector
- 24 to 20 Pin Motherboard Adapter

Wow, well, the normal pc user doesnt even need one third of all those connectors. All these SSI connectors are designated primarily for server use, and so it seems is this power supply. PcToys provided us with a 24 to 20 Pin Motherboard Adapter for us normal pc users.

The power supply

Its time to take a peak at the unit itself, is it worthy?

Here we have a few pics of the unit. Its a beast! This thing is huge! However, its looks are very appealing. The black color definitely adds a special touch to it.

Here we have a picture of the back of the unit. It has 3 settings for the fans: auto, low, and medium. Why is there no high? Hmmmm. It has an on/off switch just like any other power supply. It also has an additional AC input which is always a good thing for connecting a monitor or some other device.

I was somewhat surprised by the size of this unit, specifically the length. It is much longer than my 350W Enermax PSU. This could pose problems for users with smaller cases.
