Ocz Modstream 450w

Today we have a really cool looking power supply on the test bench. OCZ sent us their new Modstream which you can change the power cables on. You can add more power cables or remove cables depending on what you use. This way the air circulation raises in the case and you get rid of extra annoying cables laying all over. OCZ is known for their high quality product and today we will see if it’s the same thing with their new Modstream PSU`S.

45V @ 5V, 26V @ 12V and 28A @ 3,3V those are really good numbers if you compare even to the top power supplies on the market. To the right is a picture where I wanted to show you how the power supply looks mounted in a case which is a Lian-Li in this case.

Finally a picture of the power supply in action. I could not get a picture of the cables glowing with UV because our UV CCFL sucks pretty much but if you look at OCZ homepage you will find several reviews with very nice UV glowing cables.

Testing:

Intel P42,8 Ghz (socket 775)
Albatron PX915G
Mushkin 512 mb DDR 3700
40 GB Samsung 7200 rpm harddrive
Liteon 52*10*40 CDRW
Gigabyte PCX5900

Full load voltages were taken by running 3dmark2003 and idle temps were taken after windows bootup. Voltages are compared to the Coolermaster RS-450 which is the best PSU we have tested this far.

3,3V:

The modstream has very stable voltages and they stay steady when the Coolermaster flips back and forth for a bit.

5V:

Better voltages here to and the Modstream is QUIET even during load. They have got a good fan on this power supply to please the market.

12V:

This is the only test where the Coolermaster actually performs better but it’s the same here the voltage readings are rock steady on the OCZ PSU. The voltages coming from the OCZ is just very very good still and this is an extremely nice power supply.

Conclusion:

Something that amazes me is how quiet it is. I have never heard a power supply this quiet, even when you put your ear against the fan you barely hear it. The fan still does its job and cools it down and I have had no stability problems what so ever during testing. The voltages are also great as we can see on the graphs and I sure understand why this is such a popular power supply now among review sites and users. Something else that is really cool is that you can disconnect the power cables you don’t use and therefore inscreases the air flow in the case and also makes it look alot nicer. Manuals were supplied in three different languages and it was extremely well packed. We give this our fullest recommendations and 5 out of 5 for a amazingly quiet PSU which still provides your computer with the juice it really needs to both overclock and run a stable system.

Pros:

+ Quiet
+ Good voltage readings
+ Stable
+ Well packed
+ Can take of power cables
+ Well packed and good manuals

Cons:

- Would personally like longer ATX cable

Red&Blackness gives it 5 out of 5 dots
