A couple days ago I had an urgent need for an SSD for my laptop and saw OCZ Agility 3 on sale in local computer store. I decided to buy it without any further inspection what kind of disk it was and thought you might be interested in our thoughts about it. We will take a look at the 60GB model and compare it against other SSD:s we currently have available in our test laboratory. Let’s see how well it performs.

OCZ Agility 3 is colored in all black metal casing. On top of the SSD there’s a black stamp with green borders. OCZ Agility 3 is 2.5″ sized and therefore suitable in use with laptops and other computers which require 2.5″ drive. OCZ Agility 3 is priced around 60-65€ here in Finland and is widely available. It is maybe one of the most sold SSD:s in market here where I live.
The backside of the SSD does not show us anything interesting and new. There’s a large white stamp with information about the SSD, patents and capacity on it. According to stamp our sample unit has a product number AGT3-25SAT3-60G and belong sto Agility 3 series. Please notice the warranty sticker on the lower left corner. Apparently OCZ does not want users to open the casing to see what’s inside.
Like almost all SSD:s and hard disks nowdays, also OCZ Agility 3 uses SATA connector to connect to your computer. Agility 3:s SATA-connector is the standard connector with a power connector and SATA-data connector. Nothing new here. OCZ Agility 3 should be able to provide reading and writing speeds of about 500MB/s, but in order to achieve those speeds you need to plug the SSD in to SATA-III connector. However, the OCZ Agility 3 is compatible with the slower, and older generations, of SATA. You should be able to plug in the SSD to any SATA connector. We tested OCZ Agility in the old SATA-II connector of Lenovo Thinkpad T61 and the faster SATA-III connector in our test desktop computer. In Thinkpad T61 we had slight performance issues, which were fixed after updating the bios in the laptop. There were strange hangups with the older bios and the SSD worked way slower than the old HDD I had in it.
