Taking a closer look at the hard drive bay, one of the cool features is the ability to hot-swap a SATA drive out of the case, meaning that you can remove it from the front of the computer without having to open the case. Opening the lockable front door, we find bays for 4 hard drives. To install a hard drive, first attach the mounting bracket to the drive using special screws designed to fit inside the bay. Finally, simply plug in the cables from the backplane on the back of the bay to the motherboard and slide the hard drive into the bay.

However, you’ll notice that I specifically mentioned SATA hard drives; that’s because the old-fashioned IDE drives are not compatible with this design. In fact, if you want to use such a drive, you have to remove the backplane completely, eliminate the hot-swap design. While I know that SATA drives are the preferred choice for today’s builds, there are still a lot of IDE drives out there. I would have liked to have seen a spare 3.5” drive bay that could accommodate this type of drive.
Conclusion:
There’s no doubt that the Lian Li PC-9 computer case is a sophisticated product that is jam packed with features. Lian Li definitely pays attention to detail when they design a product, thinking of new things to improve the design of the case. And the quality of the build sets the standard. While the case may not be the perfect case for every build, it certainly is a top contender in the case marketplace and is worth considering for your next build.
Pros:
+ Sleek and sophisticated look
+ Lightweight, high quality construction
+ Lots of features
+ Hot-swap hard drive bay
+ Anti-vibration features
+ Good ventilation with two 120mm fans included
Cons:
- Doesn’t readily accommodate IDE drives
- No 3.5” external drive bays
