Once the computer is turned on, the LCD emits a soft blue glow and the faceplate flashes between 4 different colors. The flashing colors were pretty cool, though I heard an ever-so-faint hum/noise when it would switch between different colors. The LCD itself has a lot of useful information, including temperature (in C or F), a temperature alarm setting, a hard drive usage time recorder, and a hard drive access indicator. The easy-to-push buttons on the LCD toggle the display and some of the settings.
The hard drive I installed was a Hitachi Deskstar 80GB SATA drive. There was no difference in transfer speed between when the drive was installed normally versus when it was in the Modiflash 722 enclosure, which can be expected since theres thankfully nothing to slow things down. The hard drive temperature did not rise significantly when installed in the enclosure, thanks to the small fan and aluminum enclosure.
Conclusion:
The ICY DOCK Modiflash 722 Removal HDD enclosure is a nifty product that does its job well.If you are like me and often wish you could easily remove your internal hard drive, this enclosure indeed grants that wish. Some of the negatives I mentioned are fairly minor and shouldnt stop you from adding this handy feature to your setup.Overall, I would rate this product a 4 out of 5.
Pros:
+ Easy installation
+ Great performance
+ Clean looking design
+ Well designed LCD display
Cons:
- Slight hum when faceplate color changes
- Plastic handle
Red&Blackness gives it 4 out of 5 dots
