Introduction
Let’s have a look at something from Eksitdata tonite. It was awhile ago but they sent us a IR remote control. So what do this have to do with the computer? Well you program the buttons yourself for whichever action you want them to do. So you can for instance start programs and control winamp etc. This seems like a great addition to your HTPC system. Let’s have a look….
About Eksitdata:
EksitData is a company in Varberg that was founded in the fall of 1997. Our clientele comprises everybody from the home user to government offices. We only operate on the internet and can therefore keep our expenses on a low level. The products on this homepage are only a selection of the most frequently sold ones. We are retailers for the leading brands in the computer section.
About the product:
Buy this winamp remote control and turn your PC into an entertainment center. You can play MP3 audio or watch video files from a distance using WinAmp 3.0. All the PC functions you need are in your hands. All you need is this winamp remote control and WinLIRC (free infrared software). Don’t worry, WinLIRC works great under all Windows OS including 2000 and XP.

In all the bubble wrap we found the remote control, manual, sticky thing for the receiver and the receiver itself.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Packard Bell!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH… Ok I give up. Yes PB made this remote controll. And we are having a closer look at the IR receiver which is pretty small and flat and can be easily hidden behind or under something. It has a seriell connector
I wish it was USB instead.

Time for a closer look on the remote control this time. It’s a normal sized remote control and it’s pretty light weight. Unfortunately batteries are not included in this. On the left we see the bottom part of the remote control and on the right the top part. It almost looks like a gamepad because of that huge round button in the middle

The remote control works with normal AA batteries. Unfortunately these are not included
Programs:

There is alot of different programs you can use for this remote control… Above you see pictures of Winlirc and Nomad. Unfortunately I could not get Ir-Genie to work as it seemed like the easiest one, but Winlircworks fine after following thisguidethat I was tipped about. The version of IR-Genie (Nomad) I used was a unstable version and a new version is coming out so stay tuned
Some links to programs you can use:
WinLirc
IR-Genie
Girder
But of course there is many many more out there, but try these and see if there is any you like. Installation and programming in the beginning is a little bit tricky so count on that you have to play around with it for awhile.
Conclusion:
Remote control for your computer?! Well yes this remote control works great. After a little playing around I got it to work and I can start programs, switch between programs and control Winamp etc… ~20$ for a remote control is not bad at all when you look at what you can do with it. I feel that this product is a great addition to your HTPC (Home theater pc) system. The only flaws that I found on this were that there are not batteries included and it’s a little hard to install but that’s no biggie because we are computer people and we have the patience
All in all a great product that gets a recommendation and 4 out of 5
Pros:
+ Light weight
+ Cheap
+ Alot of features
+ Easy to use once installed
+ IR receiver is small and can be hidden
Cons:
- No batteries
- Hard to install the first time
