First Look at Coolmax V600

Deciding on a power supply can be a tough choice, with a wide range of suppliers and features for each unit. While power output is important, there are other factors such as efficiency, noise, and even looks that are equally as important. Today we’ll be looking at a 600W power supply from Coolmax, the Coolmax V600 PSU, which has been designed with performance in mind. We will keep that in mind while we examine this product and compare it to some of its competition.

The Coolmax V600 600W Power Supply arrived in a fairly plain box that we’ve come accustomed to from Coolmax, with a simple logo on the front. The package also provides a list of features/specifications.

Opening up the package, the power supply can be found rather loosely secured in a bag without any foam padding. Along with the power supply itself, the package comes with a power cord and a set of screws.

Taking a closer look at the PSU, the unit has a simple silver matte exterior with a single cooling fan, a rather large 140mm in size. One of the side panels lists the various rail outputs, with the 3.3V rail rated at 24A, the 5V rated at 24A, and the three 12V rails rated at 18A, 18A, and 15A individually.

The power supply has a basic set of cables/connectors; I was disappointed to see that the majority of the cables were not sleeved/twisted. The connectors on the 4-pin multi-use/Molex connectors did have the quick-release feature that allows you to easily remove the connectors with a pinch of the two tabs. The PSU comes with a motherboard cable, 6 peripheral cables, 1 FDD cable, 2 SATA cables, 1 4P cable, and 1 PCI-E cable. Note that it doesn’t come with dual PCI-E cables, so it is not SLI/crossfire compatible. Also the two SATA cables can be limiting to some builds that have multiple hard drives or SATA DVD burners.

Installation of the PSU was fairly straightforward. Simply place the PSU into the case and attach it using the standard four screws that are included. Finally, plug in all the peripherals you need and you’re ready to go. I did find the cables to be on the short side, however; for example, the 24 pin motherboard cable barely fit in my mid-sized Thermaltake Element case. Something to be aware of when you are considering this supply.

After turning on the computer, I was impressed by the power supply’s noise performance. As promised, the fan is low noise, even at high loads. This power supply would be well-suited for a home theater PC build.
