Conex Lighted USB cables

So I get my hands on these USB cables on first impressions they look like ordinary USB cables, until you plug them in they look quite amazing. Even the ladies like them my girlfriend thinks their great, in fact no-one that has seen them has anything but praise for them. The cables have the standard A type connector on the one end and a B type connector on the other. This does make them limited in their connectivity as only devices they can be connected to must have the B type USB connector. Although I do have a 2 hubs, a printer and a scanner that all use this connection and when plugged into these cables the scanner under the several reams of paper is worth looking at.

The end of the cables are crystal clear, not frosted, this gives them a great almost minimalist look. The colour of the LED in the cable is denoted by the coloured band around the wire near the plugs, the LEDs are the 3mm type and clear when not plugged in. The cable is a total of 6 foot in length and will probably be plenty long enough for any application. The cable has a silver braiding inside a clear tubing which looks stylish and clean. I was pleased to see the contact inside the plugs were a gold colour Im not sure if this is gold plating or copper, either are very good conductors.

So I plugged in the cable and the LED is very bright especial for its small size (3mm) the LED points away from the plug, this means that when its plugged in the light will be directed towards the cable almost giving the impression that it is lit near the ends. I received blue, green, red and white LED USB cables. All 4 colours are very vivid and they are defiantly their stated colours. I have to say the bloo was my favourite, but the combination of red and green looks very sharp.

The cables are USB 2.0 compatible and of course will work with USB 1.0/1. Another application for this cables is if you have a lot of peripherals you can quickly see which cable plugs win where, especially if you are like me and have lots of tangled wires. The limited connectivity can cause problems but this can be overcome by a modder and decent soldering iron skills, just replace the wire on any USB device, the wires are correctly colour coded so it should be no problem.

I wanted to make sure that these USB cables were not slow and performed as well as their non lighted counterparts. I connected a USB 1.1 mp3 player up via a belkin hub, I first used the belkin A-B USB cable to connect to the hub, I then transferred a 10mb file to the MP3 player, the file transferred in 8.96 seconds and I then replaced the cable with the lighted cable and transferred the same file, this time it took 8.93 seconds, although quicker this difference is negligible as my reaction time on the stop watch more than covers for the difference. It does show that this cable is well built and will function as a standard USB cable as fast as other cables.
