Time for another CPU review, today we have a sample of a Phenom 2 X4 980 cpu for testing that we are going to throw against an Intel CPU and a AMD CPU. Lets figure out how well these end up performing.

About AMD:

Read more about AMD on their website, http://www.amd.com/us/aboutamd/Pages/AboutAMD.aspx

Specifications:

Model Number 980
Frequency  3.7 GHz
Total L2 Cache  2MB
L3 Cache  6MB
Packaging  socket AM3
Thermal Design Power  125W
CMOS Technology  45nm SOI

The CPU’s we get from AMD are tray samples that come in this small green tray without any cpu cooler. There is not much to say about the CPU itself so lets get the testing going.

Testing:

Asrock H61M / USB3 Motherboard
Intel Core i5 2500K 3,3GHz CPU
Corsair Vengeance 8gb (2X4 GB) PC3-12800
Asus 9800GT Videocard
Crucial M225 64GB 2.5″ SSD
Corsair 700W PSU

We used the following software for testing, Sisoft Sandra 2011, Pcmark 7, SuperPi and Winrar.

Testing was done between the following CPU’s:

AMD Phenom 2 X4 980 (3,7 GHz) ~ 150 $
AMD Phenom 2 X6 1090T (3,2GHz) ~ 190$
Intel Core i5 2500K (3,3GHz) ~225$

Sisoft Sandra 2011, Cpu Arithmetic:

In this test the numbers are supposed to be as high as possible. We can clearly see a difference between the Intel and AMD cpu. The main battle that we are going to focus on is the AMD CPU’s, the Intel CPU is as a reference.
