Today we are taking a look at a new Athlon 2 cpu from AMD. They have resurrected the Athlon name and made both dual and quad cores, we are looking at the quad core named 620 today that sells for around 90$. The question is what type of performance we can expect from these lower end cpu´s on the market? Lets take a closer look at what results we got.

This is a socket AM3 CPU so make sure you got a motherboard that can support it. There is not much difference on the AM2 and 3 cpus except a couple of pins on the bottom. This is a lower end cpu with a price around 90$, Intel has also several of these similar cpu´s on the market and they have performed quite well according to reports I have read, so I’m quite curious about this cpu.

Testing:

MSI 785GM-E65
AMD Athlon 2 X4 620 CPU
Corsair TR3X6G1600C7 DDR3
Patriot TorqX 64GB SSD
Coolermaster M700 PSU
Asus 9800GT Videocard

Testing was done with the following software, Sisoft Sandra 2009, Pcmark Vantage, SuperPi, Winrar and Call of Juarez. We are comparing this CPU vs the AMD Phenom 2 905e and vs the lower end dual core Athlon 2 X2 245.

Sisoft Sandra 2009, Cpu Arithmetic:

Now first thing we have to remember is that the 620 sells for about 90$ while the 905e goes for about 160$ and the 245 for 50$. We can see here that the 620 is actually faster in GIPS but a tad slower in Gflops so this far we have a tie.
